Samsung CHG90, 49-Inch Curved QLED Gaming Monitor Launched in India

Samsung’s mega-wide gaming monitor.

Samsung India on Wednesday launched the “world’s biggest curved monitor” for gaming enthusiasts and business professionals Samsung CHG90 for Rs. 1,50,000.A 49-inch ultra-wide curved QLED monitor.
The Samsung CHG90 was first unveiled in June this year and hit certain markets in August. It has now arrived in India and is already available to purchase via Samsung’s online store. The Samsung CHG90 will also become available to buy via retail stores soon.

Super Ultra-wide screen.

Samsung’s new 49-inch monitor is a sight to behold for several reasons. It’s the approximate size and dimensions of a subway car, with a 49-inch diagonal and a 32:9 aspect ratio. It’s enough to make the ultrawide displays of a few years ago (a paltry 21:9) feel a bit small.
The Samsung CHG90 has a very weird 3,840 x 1,080 resolution (a 32:9 aspect ratio),144 Hz refresh, AMD FreeSync support, deep curvature and a Rs. 1,50,000 price tag, so it’s not for everyone. It’s built mainly to replace multi-monitor setups so that you can, say, game on one half and stream on the other. As a single screen, it could give you more visibility and flexibility with controls, but does not, obviously, deliver full 4K resolution.
The Samsung CHG90 49-inch curved monitor supports HDR (High Dynamic Range) for improved contrast and colour depth. On Tuesday, Samsung also announced that the Samsung CHG90 had become the first monitor to be certified as Display HDR compliant by Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA).
Over the past few years, we’ve seen high-end panel specifications split somewhat depending on what kind of features you wanted. High-end, professional-grade displays with hardware-calibrated colour and IPS panels with 4K support are available, but not necessarily great for gaming. Great gaming panels that support FreeSync and/or G-Sync are available but don’t always have ideal image quality. 4K TVs with HDR support have been available for a while, but they’ve lacked FreeSync/G-Sync support. OLED televisions and a few monitors are available, with very fast refresh times, but they don’t always support HDR or Adaptive Sync (the generic VESA name for the capabilities baked into what AMD and Nvidia call FreeSync and G-Sync, respectively).
Some of these variations, like the split between panel color quality and low ‘ghosting’ in games, have been common for years, but the multi-way split between OLED, LCDs, HDR, 4K, and ultrawide (21:9) and what I’m jokingly calling “subway car” (an actual NYC Metro subway car is 51 feet long and 8.6 feet wide, as opposed to 32:9,
but it’s close enough for fun) is newer. We’re starting to see displays hitting the market that combines these various capabilities without asking users to pick whether they want one or the other, and while the CHG90 doesn’t offer a superset of 4K resolution, it ticks most of the other boxes.
The Samsung CHG90 isn’t exactly cheap, but it packs quite a bit of performance into its four-figures-with tax-price tag. Just be aware the emphasis on width does come at the expense of some overall resolution. It’s become common for 3440×1440 displays to ship in 27-inch and 34-inch form factors.
But this 49-inch panel has a resolution of just 3840×1080. Any content you watch on it in 4K will have broad black bars on both sides; modern movies and TV aren’t offered in a 32:9 aspect ratio.
VESA promised to announce multiple Display HDR certified monitors on or before CES 2018 so you can expect to see others soon. It will be interesting to see which is the first to conform to Display HDR 1000, which is much more demanding for brightness and black levels (contrast). If consumers start pushing manufacturers to meet those specs, it will be a big plus for both gamers and streamers.

Samsung CHG90 Gaming Monitor Inputs:

  1. 2x HDMI.
  2. Audio In (3.5mm).
  3. 3.5mm Headphone jack.
  4. Display Port.
  5. USB Hub  (USB Super Charging).
  6. Mini Display Port.
